Why do incense stick prices vary so much?

Fragrance sources, ingredient grades, and recipe proportions help explain incense stick price differences. Check stick size, quantity, and burn time, too.

When comparing incense stick prices, look beyond the price on the box. Where does the fragrance come from? What ingredients are used? How many sticks are in each pack, how long are they, and how long do they burn? These details help explain the price difference.

Incense sticks labeled "agarwood" or "sandalwood" can vary widely in price. Much of that difference comes from the ingredients behind the scent. Using aromatic wood and recreating a similar scent with a fragrance blend involve different ingredient costs. The grade of the materials and the amount used in the formula can widen the gap further.

Lower prices can start with the formula

Some sellers reduce formula costs to attract customers with lower prices. Replacing part of the more expensive natural incense materials with cheaper synthetic fragrances can produce a similar scent at a lower cost.

Two products may both be described as having an "agarwood scent," yet use different ingredients. One puts its material budget into agarwood; another uses a fragrance blend to create a similar smell. Belonging to the same scent family doesn't mean they cost the same to make.

Natural incense materials also vary in price, and the amount used matters. With other factors being similar, a formula containing a small amount of agarwood alongside other materials can have a very different ingredient cost from one that uses agarwood as its main aromatic material. Seeing "agarwood" on both ingredient lists doesn't mean the grade or proportion is the same.

Check the size and quantity of incense sticks

When comparing prices, check the stick length, thickness, number of sticks per pack, and burn time so you don't mistake a smaller quantity for a lower price.

At Oudhalo, all our incense sticks are 21 cm (about 8.27 inches) long and burn for approximately 45 to 60 minutes each, giving you plenty of time to enjoy the scent.

Two options to try first

Mysore Root Sandalwood incense sticks contain Mysore sandalwood root and Indonesian nanmu binder powder, with a dry, understated woody scent.

Orange Jasmine Sandalwood incense sticks contain Mysore sandalwood, orange jasmine, and Indonesian nanmu binder powder. Warm sandalwood accompanies a delicate floral scent with a hint of green freshness.

Both come in small 20 g packs of approximately 40 sticks. Start with the scent you prefer, get to know the ingredients, and find the one that suits your everyday use.
