That sounds like a small detail, but it changes the way incense feels in a room. A bamboo-core stick burns the bamboo along with the fragrance. That can add a sharper smoke note, especially in small rooms. Bamboo-free incense tends to feel softer because the whole stick is part of the scent formula.

This format also has a long place in Chinese incense making. A good handmade Chinese incense stick is not built to smell like a perfume stick with a wooden skewer inside. It is usually quieter than the heavily perfumed incense many people associate with Indian temple or gift-shop sticks. The point is not to fill the room with a loud cloud. The point is to let a scent sit in the background while you read, drink tea, clean the room, write, or slow down at night.

If you want a gentle first try, choose a soft wood or floral wood blend rather than a heavy resin or sweet perfume style. Lavender sandalwood, quiet sandalwood, or a light frankincense blend usually makes more sense for beginners.
